Liverpool are keeping tabs on a Bundesliga defender as they weigh up a potential free transfer.

The Reds enjoyed a record-breaking summer, spending well over £300million on the likes of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak as they look to retain the Premier League title.

Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez also arrived, with the club strengthening across the board to compete on all fronts.

Despite their heavy investment, Liverpool remain on the lookout for bargains.

On deadline day, they came close to sealing a £35m deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, only for the Eagles to pull the plug at the last moment.

Guehi’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he could leave on a free transfer and begin negotiating with foreign clubs from January.

That situation mirrors several others, including Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano, who, according to BILD, has emerged as a target for Liverpool.

The Reds are still in the market for a centre-back after missing out on Guehi.

They currently have four senior options, including Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Giovanni Leoni, who joined in the summer but has since suffered an ACL injury.

Gomez’s future remains uncertain after he came close to leaving in the last window, while Konate’s deal runs until next year and he has been heavily linked with Real Madrid.

Upamecano, meanwhile, is a regular for Bayern, but his long-term future is unclear.

Talks over a new contract have taken place, yet no agreement has been reached, and time is running out before he can begin discussions with foreign clubs.

Real Madrid are also reported to be among the suitors for the 26-year-old.

The France international has racked up six appearances this season at the heart of Bayern’s defence.

Since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021, he has played over 150 games for the German champions.
