Former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has opened up on why he believes his old club lost out on Florian Wirtz to Liverpool.

The Germany international recently became the tenth player to break the Anfield club’s transfer record in the Premier League era last month.

The Reds announced on Friday, June 20, that they had completed the signing of the playmaker from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100 million, signing a long-term contract.

However, that fee could potentially become a British record, as there are £16m of add-ons included in the deal.

Wirtz, who made his Liverpool debut against Stoke City on Sunday, is believed to have made it clear that his preference was a move to Anfield even though both Bayern and Manchester City wanted to sign him.

At one point, though, the Bavarians were believed to be in pole position to sign the German international, but Wirtz revealed after joining the Reds that Arne Slot’s vision for Liverpool persuaded him to move to Merseyside.

Wirtz even went as far as admitting that there was a time when he 'didn’t expect Liverpool to be his next club', and now reacting to the transfer, Kahn has questioned if the Bundesliga's appeal was one of the reasons for the former FC Koln man making the move to the Premier League champions.

"I don't know if you should break it down to the club issue,” he told Sky Sports Germany.

“I think you should first break it down to the league issue.

“I don't know if that's a problem for FC Bayern or a problem for the Bundesliga itself.

That's the first thing I would consider as a player.

"And if you think about it, 'Okay, I'm going to FC Bayern and then becoming German champions for the 15th, 16th, 17th time, is that really so appealing to me?'

“Of course, winning the Champions League is always incredibly appealing.

But the amount of thought that goes into it is quite astonishing.

"FC Bayern have won the German championship 12 times in 13 years.
