The race for Xabi Alonso has heated up after Bayern Munich’s decision on their future that was announced today.

The Bavarian giants have decided to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.

It is hardly the most shocking news as the former Chelsea man has largely struggled to implement his style in Munich.

This month especially, Tuchel’s men have endured three consecutive losses that really put the final nails in the coffin.

On February 12, Bayer Leverkusen defeated the records German champions 3-0 at the BayArena.

This was followed up by an uninspiring 1-0 away loss to Lazio in the first-leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League.

Then, in the Bundesliga this past weekend, Bayern lost shockingly to VfL Bochum 3-2.

In addition to the previously mentioned points differential and the vulnerable Champions League place, Tuchel’s team was eliminated by FC Saarbrücken, a third division team, in the second round of the DFB-Pokal earlier this season.

It comes then as little surprise that the Bavarian club decided to part ways with Tuchel come the end of the season.

Bayern Munich being eight points behind another club was always going to reflect badly on the manager.

And it now seems that Alonso could find himself making a choice between Bayern Munich and Liverpool in the summer.

Bayern Munich have inquired about Xabi Alonso

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenburg has reported that FC Bayern Munich has already inquired about Xabi Alonso.

Alonso is aware of the interest but is 100% focused on the current season.

His side sit atop the Bundesliga standings with an eight-point lead, are in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal, and are awaiting their round of 16 Europa League opponents.

In theory, the treble is still on for Leverkusen this season – further vindication for both Liverpool and Bayern of the Spaniard’s quality.

It is believed that Alonso is the Plan A for the Bavarian outfit – meaning Liverpool and Bayern could go head-to-head for the Spaniard in the summer.
