Bayern Munich appear to be imploding behind the scenes as the club’s chiefs play the blame game over their failed pursuit of Florian Wirtz.
The Bundesliga champions were in the mix to land the attacker but look set to miss out on his signature to Liverpool.
Wirtz has enjoyed a sensational few seasons at Bayer Leverkusen and finished the 2024/25 campaign with 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances.
But he appears to be on the way to Anfield, with the Reds and Leverkusen said to be working towards striking a quick agreement for the 22-year-old.
Liverpool have already seen a £109million bid for the playmaker rejected, with his current employers holding out for a British record transfer fee of £126m.

According to Bild, Bayern’s sporting management couldn’t convince Wirtz to move to the Allianz Arena and bosses have identified sporting chief executive Max Eberl as the scapegoat.
The outlet claim that Eberl was defensive every time he spoke about a pursuit of Wirtz and may have known a transfer wasn’t going to be easy.
The 51-year-old is said to have been in a losing position, whatever the outcome, as he is being blamed for Bayern’s failure to get their man, while the club’s honorary president Uli Hoeness would have received the credit if a deal had been completed.
The German publication have also claimed that Wirtz was the player of choice for Liverpool boss Arne Slot and point to the fact that Bayern have failed in other recent transfer endeavours as Vincent Kompany failed to convince Xavi Simons to move to the club last summer.
Wirtz has been tipped to succeed at Liverpool if he does complete his move to England, with ex-Germany manager Joachim Low explaining: “Liverpool is a real statement because moving to the Premier League also involves a lot of adaptation and that starts with the rhythm of the game.
“But Florian Wirtz has no upper limit, he's definitely ready for the next step.
We've had that feeling for a long time.”
However, the 65-year-old had expected the talented playmaker to link up with former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid as he added: “I just thought he'd be more likely to choose Real Madrid if he went abroad.
“He has developed enormously under him and they have a great relationship of trust.
That's very important for a young player.
“Nevertheless, I have no concerns that Wirtz will prevail, no matter where he would have gone.
“He plays with a naturalness that can't be coached.
