'Beautiful': Cody Gakpo recalls 'special moment' when he knew Liverpool were going to be champions

Liverpool romped towards the Premier League title and won it with four games to spare.

The Reds’ first season under Arne Slot was supposed to be a transition period and one where expectations were not as high, or at least that’s how it looked from the outside looking in.

However, fast forward to the end of the season and Liverpool picking up their 20th league title has now set the bar incredibly high ahead of the new campaign.

Although winning it by just 10 points, the Reds could have created a much bigger gap to second-placed Arsenal, but weeks of celebrations meant a drop-off was evident on the pitch.

Fans, of course, will not care about that at all and despite winning it with four weeks of the season still to go, winger Cody Gakpo has revealed the exact moment that he and the team knew they would be Premier League champions.

As the famous saying goes, ‘it’s not over until it’s over’, and this is something that almost every footballer convinces fans too with their PR-heavy answers in post-match interviews.

However, speaking very honestly with the Liverpool Echo, Gakpo revealed that sometimes it is hard not to believe early on, with the Dutchman recalling the moment the players knew they were going to be champions.

“We had a lot of great games, maybe, the 2-0 win against City at home which really, we already had a very good feeling, but maybe this gave us more confidence that we could do something special this season,” Gakpo said.

“I think that was a special moment.

We had a lot of beautiful moments.”

Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City occurred all the way back at the start of December with the Reds nine points clear at the top of the table.

Although there was plenty of the season still left to play at that point, it was clear that this was somewhat of a turning point in the season and it is no wonder the players started to believe, especially just after beating a team that had handed them so much frustration over the past few years.

Being at the top is one thing but staying there is a whole other matter, although plans are already in place to try and achieve this.

Liverpool are set to demolish the British transfer record as Florian Wirtz edges closer to joining, while Milos Kerkez is expected to arrive soon after.

The Reds are also planning the exit of fringe players to help keep their squad compact, with Kostas Tsimikas, Jarrel Quansah and Harvey Elliott linked with a move away.

After getting their business done early, it would be no surprise if the Liverpool players were already believing that they could win the league again next season, although retaining the title is the hardest job of them all.
