Chelsea have made a more positive impact by getting Ben Chilwell’s wages off the books than his actual sale this summer.

That is according to football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that the change in wages and amortisation is more important than the player’s transfer fee.

Chelsea were fined millions by UEFA for breaching their financial rules, £26.7million to be exact, but it has been covered extensively that PSR is not a concern for those at Stamford Bridge.

There has been a lot of transfer business conducted by the Blues this summer, with Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker stunned by Chelsea‘s record £300million in sales over the last few weeks.

Ben Chilwell joined Strasbourg just hours before the transfer window slammed shut on Monday, 1 September, becoming just the next exit in a long list of confirmed transfers this summer.

This article contains exclusive comments from Dan Plumley, a football finance expert and senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University.

Following the full-back’s move to Strasbourg, a club also a part of the BlueCo group, the Blues received a fee believed to be in the region of £17million.

Speaking to Football Insider exclusively, Plumley explained why getting Chilwell’s wages off the books was more important than the transfer fee.

He said, “You’re looking at the principal there.

I’d be looking at the wage aspect of that, and the savings that you’re going to make there to get that player off of your wage bill.

“That’ll shift the overall wage costs.

So, it’s absolutely more about the wage and amortisation difference that makes, within UEFA’s regulations, rather than the transfer fee.

“That is not going to make too much of an impact, really, either way, given Chelsea’s overall position against PSR.

I’ve been looking at the wage bill and the amortisation saving in particular.”

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, with the Blues still covering half of his £190,000-a-week wages [The Sun], despite no longer being part of Enzo Maresca‘s plans.

It became clear that Chilwell was not going to make a comeback in the 2025/26 campaign, with Marc Cucurella, Reece James, and Malo Gusto being joined by Jorrel Hato at full-back.

With Strasbourg aiming to climb the Ligue 1 table, it was a deal that made sense for all parties, with the Blues no longer having to think about the player’s wages while out on loan.
