Manchester City star Bernardo Silva is edging closer to leaving the club after an admission from Benfica manager Bruno Lage.

Benfica are keen to bring Silva back to his former club, with the 31-year-old having just one year left on his current deal at Man City.

Silva has spent eight years in Manchester, winning six Premier League titles and a Champions League among his achievements.

Pep Guardiola has looked to freshen his squad up over the summer transfer window, but Silva was appointed club captain and remains a key player.

Bernardo Silva looks set to leave Man City.

Benfica manager Lage has seemed to confirm the signing of Silva to the club.

In his press conference before Benfica host Santa Clara, Lage said: “Without wanting to enter the political side, from what I know of Bernardo and his motivation, soon he will be a Benfica player, regardless of the president.”

Lage’s comments come after Joao Noronha Lopes, running to become the next president of the Portuguese club, said “there is a contract waiting for Bernardo Silva.”

It remains to be seen whether Benfica can convince Man City to sell the player in January, or whether Silva will leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

After Kevin De Bruyne departed to Napoli over the summer, Jack Grealish joined Everton on loan, and the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Ederson and Kyle Walker also moved on, the changing of the guard looks set to continue with Silva.

Silva has played an integral role to Man City’s success under Guardiola, there for all but one season of his trophy laden reign.

Now the club captain, Guardiola trusts Silva and may make an attempt to keep the Portugal internal at the Etihad.

Benfica though sound confident that a deal is all but signed and Silva will return to the club he came through the academy at.

Guardiola now needs the likes of Tijjani Reijnders, Jeremy Doku and Phil Foden to step up in the future, as Man City continue to evolve on the pitch.
