Tottenham fans are overjoyed on social media after newly-appointed captain Cristian Romero committed his future to the club with a new contract.
Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021 on an initial season-long loan, and he has developed into one of the most highly-rated centre-backs in the world over the last few years at the club after his move was made permanent in 2022.
The Argentinian international’s future was uncertain heading into the summer transfer window after former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in March that Romero would be open to a move to Real Madrid.
It was the red and white side of the Spanish capital that soon looked primed to make a move for his services as Football Insider revealed that Atletico Madrid were plotting a move for Romero, but Tottenham were standing firm on their £60million valuation of his services.
Atletico halted their pursuit of Romero in July after deciding against making a formal offer to Tottenham for his services, and now he looks set to remain in North London for the foreseeable future as the club look to progress under Thomas Frank.

The Athletic reported last month that Atletico’s chiefs were expecting Spurs to open contract talks with Romero this summer, and they were right to assume as such, with Tottenham confirming via X post (18 August) that the 27-year-old had signed an extension to his existing deal, which was set to end in 2027.
Their announcement read: “We are delighted to announce that Cristian Romero has signed a new, long-term contract with the Club,” while the BBC confirmed that he is now tied down until 2029.

Spurs’ chiefs believe Romero is “one of the best defenders in the world” [The Times] right now, and it is tough to disagree given his performances over the years, as well as the fact that numerous other major European clubs have been seriously interested in his services.
The 27-year-old featured just 18 times in the Premier League last term, but he was recently given the captain’s armband by Frank and looks set to be a key man this season once again.
Tottenham fans are clearly over the moon about the “absolutely huge” news of him committing his future to the club, with one saying that he is a “future Spurs legend,” while another replied that the news is “better than any signing.”
