Celtic fans have reacted harshly to the club’s announcement of Kelechi Iheanacho joining after they searched for a striker throughout the summer window but had to settle for a free transfer.

Celtic sold main striker Adam Idah to Swansea City on Monday (1 September) with the transfer deadline looming, but it seemed as if they had new players lined up to sign to make sure that his absence was not to be felt.

Kasper Dolberg’s move to Celtic was soon hijacked by former club Ajax, however, and then they missed out David Datro Fofana on loan from Chelsea as he instead preferred a move to Charlton Athletic [The Scottish Sun].

Panic stations seemingly ensued at Parkhead, and Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (2 September) that Celtic were lining up a move for free agent striker Kelechi Iheanacho after he was released by Sevilla on deadline day.

Iheanacho is now officially through the door at the Glasgow giants, but the majority of their supporters are not happy at the move and lack of planning that has led to this point.

Celtic officially announced Iheanacho’s arrival with a post to their official X account on Tuesday (2 September) night, saying: “Celtic Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year deal, subject to international clearance, with the club having the option of a further year.”

Iheanacho is best known in British football for his spells at Manchester City between 2014 and 2017, as well as at Leicester City from 2017 and 2024, during which he netted 42 goals in 196 Premier League appearances.

The Nigeria international striker struggled during the latter stages of his time with the Foxes, then moved to Sevilla in 2024 and netted three goals in 11 appearances in all competitions, while going out on loan to Championship side Middlesbrough last term, where he scored just once in 15 outings.

Celtic’s setbacks in the market have led them to need to sign Iheanacho on a free transfer simply to bolster Brendan Rodgers’ striker depth, and a number of supporters are unhappy at his capture, with one replying to the club’s announcement saying: “Beyond embarrassing,” while another added: “I had literally zero expectation and you’ve still managed to disappoint.

Amateurs.”

There have also been calls to sack Rodgers and club chiefs as a result of the situation coming out of the window.
