Nottingham Forest needs to continue improving their squad or else they risk throwing away the long-term growth the club has worked so hard to achieve.
That is the view of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that he expects “one or two” new signings before the end of the transfer deadline.
Forest began the window by selling one of their best players from last season, Anthony Elanga, to Newcastle.
With cash to spend, some may have expected a quick response, but the debacle that was Morgan Gibbs-White’s nearly transfer to Tottenham seemed to have a knock-on impact on the club’s ability to do any further business.
That was until Nuno Espirito Santo spoke out about his lack of a relationship with Evangelos Marinakis, and how unimpressed he was with the Tricky Trees’ transfers so far.
Nottingham Forest responded by signing Omari Hutchinson, Arnaud Kalimuendo, and James McAtee, but the problems remain at the City Ground and there is still uncertainty over who will be in charge come the end of September.

Amidst the chaos, there remains the inescapable fact that this season will be one of the most important in Forest’s recent history.
Speaking to Football Insider exclusively, Plumley explained why Santo’s side will likely go out and spend, and how European football would enable that.
He said: “The Europa League is a big, big factor within this.
I think we’ve seen that play out now, and maybe they were having to wait for that to work out where they were going to be, to then go, okay, so we now can go and spend a little bit more.

“There is a big difference money-wise between the Conference League and the Europa League.
Okay, it’s not Champions League money, but it does enable you to spend.
“And also with Forest, they’re another one of those examples where they’ve almost got to go and spend if they’re in Europe, because you need to push on and be able to compete in that competition and give it a good go.
“I’d expect probably one or two more to come in over the course of the next week or so.”
Santo is now one of the favourite Premier League managers to lose his job, following his surprising comments.
And whilst the end of the transfer window usually comes with a focus on incoming players, there may soon be an incoming manager at the City Ground.

Jose Mourinho would be open to returning to England with Nottingham Forest, Mick Brown told Football Insider exclusively.
The legendary Portuguese manager has not coached in the Premier League since being fired from the Tottenham job in 2021, but is often linked with a return to the British Isles when a managerial position becomes vacant.
