Benjamin Sesko was Manchester United’s third forward line addition in the summer transfer window, joining from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.

Eyebrows were raised when Amorim favoured bringing on Joshua Zirkzee over Sesko half an hour into his side’s match against Burnley on the weekend after a Matheus Cunha injury, but the 22-year-old eventually did get his chance to play in the match.

It is worth pointing out that Sesko had no pre-season prior to his move to Old Trafford, so may be behind his teammates in his physical preparation for the season, hence his absence from Amorim’s four starting line ups so far this season.

Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, ex-Manchester United striker Louis Saha has issued a damning claim regarding the club’s squad building techniques.

“There has always been a combination at Manchester United to have young players who are going to disrupt and bring unpredictability.

“But at the same have experience where it’s very valuable and you’re passing on information.

This has not been the case in the last three or four years so it’s been really a big mistake and I think they’ve done it again,” Saha continued.

“I think he’s capable [Sesko] if the manager manages to get that link between midfield and striker, unfortunately we didn’t get the midfielder we wanted so we’re still very weak in that department.

“This is why I think Sesko will struggle a little bit until we get that sorted, he’s got the quality because he’s tall, he’s going to score goals in the air and he’s very technical as well,” Saha went on.

“All his movement is right up there, so I’m very confident he’s going to get chances and he’s going to score, but to get us where we want, I don’t think that’s going to be on him,” he finished.

Football Insider verdict

United conceded the 10th most goals in the Premier League last season (54), a figure that places them around clubs like Aston Villa (51), Brighton (59), and Brentford (57), with those clubs finishing sixth, eighth, and 10th respectively, while United finished 15th.

The Red Devils’ issues last season came at the other end of the pitch, scoring the fifth least amount of goals (44), behind only the three relegated sides and Everton, and it was clear that the club’s summer business targeted a lack of goalscoring as an issue.

Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha come with proven Premier League goalscoring records, while Sesko has a promising scoring history in his fledgling career.

The issues now are creating goalscoring opportunities regularly, especially with their best creative player, Fernandes, in the number eight position.

Through their first three Premier League games of the season United have generated 5.1 non-penalty expected goals, a number that sees them third in the league, so perhaps the creative tide is turning in Manchester.
