'Big red flag' - Man United fans baffled by 'horrendous' Benjamin Sesko decision

Thu 28 August 2025 10:54, UK

Man United fans have been unable to hide their frustrations over Benjamin Sesko after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

The new £74million signing was handed his first start in United colours on Wednesday, 27 August, as under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim and his side travelled to Blundell Park to face Grimsby Town.

Despite being favourites in the second round of the cup, the Red Devils found themselves two goals behind after half an hour, thanks to Charles Vernam and former United academy man Tyrell Warren.

With late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, the Premier League giants forced the game to penalties, and this is exactly where Sesko caught the attention of away fans, and for all the wrong reasons.

Bruno Fernandes, Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha all stepped up in the first six penalties for United, albeit the latter saw his effort saved to win the shootout, with the new striker signing finally stepping up 10th.

He was just one before goalkeeper Andre Onana, who Man United fans are ready to sell, before Mbeumo finally missed the key penalty, which saw Grimsby go through to the next round of the competition.

Amorim is quickly running out of time to prove himself worthy of the manager spot at Old Trafford, and it appears that some of his players are doing very little to keep him in the job for the 2025/26 campaign.

It was only Sesko’s first start for the club, but supporters are already starting to question whether he was the right signing this summer, especially after splashing over £70m on his signature.

Despite putting his effort past Christy Pym, supporters were baffled by Sesko going 10th in the shootout for United, with one fan calling the decision “very strange” for the new marquee signing.

Another supporter highlighted how this could suggest a “weak mentality” from the 22-year-old, who was absent for much of the game at Blundell Park, while a third was convinced that he had been substituted.

It was certainly an embarrassing night for all involved for the Red Devils, but even more so for the striker, who is already being questioned as a good enough signing for the 20-time Premier League winners.
