Raheem Sterling left Liverpool for Manchester City to become the best player he could be - not because of the money.

That's according to his former manager at Liverpool Brendan Rodgers, who has heaped praise on the England international.

Five years on and the forward has won two Premier League trophies with Man City, and Rodgers has suggested he made the right decision back in 2015.

"When I ask young players what is it that they want to achieve, he wanted to be one of the best players in the world, at that age.

He was one of Liverpool's best players at the time, but Sterling saw the opportunity to win silverware at the Etihad and pushed through a move.

"In that moment in time, there was an opportunity to go to Manchester City where they had top-class players.

It was about being the best he can be," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.
