Brendan Rodgers may be considering a Celtic exit in the near future after a disappointing transfer window.

The Hoops spent just £13million in total this summer, and the owners have come under heavy criticism from supporters for their lack of investment.

Celtic were also knocked out in the Champions League play-off round, after an embarrassing penalty shootout defeat to Kazakh side Kairat Almaty, which sparked outrage.

Football Insider revealed on 27 August that Rodgers is high on the shortlist at Nottingham Forest and is in contention for the role should it become available.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Scot would jump at the opportunity to leave the Glasgow giants.

This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen CEO.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insists that Rodgers is asking questions of the board after yet another underwhelming transfer window.

Celtic announced the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho on Tuesday (2 September), who was far from the club’s top target, after they missed out on a number of potential deals.

Wyness added that he wouldn’t be surprised if Rodgers throws the towel in at some stage in the future.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Brendan Rodgers and the fans are going to be asking serious questions about the board.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Brendan suddenly throws the towel in and quits Celtic.

I don’t think he’s that far away from thinking that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he jumped ship pretty quickly.

So, hey, nothing seems to change in Scottish football, but there we are.

It’s an unhappy place at the moment, unfortunately.”

Meanwhile, Rangers are preparing to sack Russell Martin this month despite Kevin Thelwell’s public show of support, sources have told Football Insider.

The Ibrox manager is fighting for his job following a wretched start to his reign since his summer arrival.

Sources close to the Rangers board say there is a growing expectation within the club that Martin will be gone by the end of September.

Only a dramatic turnaround in results and performances will be enough to keep the 39-year-old in his role, and even that may not prevent a change in the dugout, with the club already tentatively exploring potential alternatives.
