Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa.
The 28-year-old missed last weekend’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest, having trained away from the squad after expressing his desire to leave the club.
A second bid from Newcastle, worth up to £40m for the DR Congo international, was rejected this week.
The offer included add-ons valued at up to £5m, which could have taken the total package to £40m.
Earlier this summer, Newcastle had a £25m bid for Wissa turned down by Brentford.
Wissa’s 19 goals in last season’s Premier League have attracted interest from several clubs, and manager Eddie Howe is exploring ways to strengthen his squad as Newcastle prepare for a return to the Champions League this term.
Yoane Wissa expected to secure a move to Newcastle this week, following Brentford’s club-record signing of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth.
Brentford have already seen another forward, Bryan Mbeumo, depart this summer, joining Manchester United.
The Bees have also lost captain Christian Norgaard to Arsenal and head coach Thomas Frank.
Coach Keith Andrews has reiterated his desire to retain Wissa amid Newcastle’s ongoing interest.
“He’s been training with the team,” said Andrews.
“In terms of being involved this weekend I’ll make a decision on the squad on Saturday.
That is what I would like.”
