Newcastle United have been given a major boost in their bid to sign Yoane Wissa as Brentford finally line up a replacement striker.

The Magpies have already missed out on numerous signings this summer, including Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko.

However, with Liverpool relentlessly pursuing Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson’s contract expiring, another striker signing appears to be critical — even after securing Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.

Wissa scored 19 Premier League goals last season and has been heavily linked with Newcastle throughout this summer.

Now, a breakthrough finally appears to be on the horizon.

According to Sky Sports (29 August), Brentford have entered talks with Borussia Dortmund for Max Beier.

The two-time Germany international only joined Die Schwarzgelbe from Hoffenheim last summer, and enjoyed a solid debut season at Signal Iduna Park, registering nine goals and six assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

That record includes a return of eight goals and six assists in 29 Bundesliga outings, while Beier also scored against Real Madrid in the Club World Cup this summer.

Sky’s report states that Beier is a ‘replacement for Wissa’, with Newcastle now working on another ‘behind the scenes’ move for the 28-year-old striker.

If Brentford can complete the signing of 22-year-old Beier, it would make Newcastle’s move for Wissa much easier, though the saga is expected to run into the final hours of the transfer window.

While signing Woltemade doesn’t necessarily guarantee Isak’s exit, the subsequent capture of Wissa surely would.

It’s understood that the only way for Newcastle to sign Wissa is to sell Isak, with the Magpies having already spent huge sums on Woltemade, Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw this summer.

Football Insider sources say there is now increasing confidence at Liverpool that they can agree a deal for Isak before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.

And admittedly, despite Eddie Howe’s insistence that he wants to keep the player, there has always been an air of inevitability about his move to Anfield.

His addition would greatly strengthen Arne Slot’s Premier League title retention claim — especially considering the signing of Marc Guehi also appears to be on the cards.

Meanwhile, for Newcastle, it might just be better to do whatever is required to sign Wissa, and move on from the entire Isak saga as quickly as possible.
