Brentford have confirmed the signings of a Liverpool pair this summer with a transfer link starting to develop between the two clubs.
Over the past 18 months, Brentford has shown their willingness to pay substantial fees for Liverpool’s established talent, creating a pipeline that has proven lucrative for the Merseyside club.
The spending spree began with Fabio Carvalho’s £27.5 million move to the Gtech Community Stadium in August 2024.
Just weeks later, Sepp van den Berg followed suit for £25 million, with Brentford paying an initial £20 million plus £5 million in performance-related bonuses.
The Dutch defender, who had made just four senior appearances for Liverpool since joining from PEC Zwolle in 2019, represented a significant profit for the Reds who had initially paid £4.4 million for his services.
The most recent addition to this growing list came last month when Caoimhin Kelleher completed his £18 million transfer to Brentford?
The Irish goalkeeper, who had served as Alisson’s reliable deputy for several seasons, moved for an initial £12.5 million with add-ons potentially taking the fee to £18 million.
While the big-money moves grabbed headlines, Brentford have also now snapped up some academy talent from Anfield.
The latest Bees scholarship announcements have revealed that Layton Nicholls and Nathaniel Ogungbemi have both made the switch from Liverpool’s academy to join Brentford’s development setup.
Layton Nichollsis a particularly intriguing acquisition for the Bees.
The goalkeeper began his footballing journey as a centre-back during his foundation phase at Liverpool before transitioning to goalkeeping.
Previously signed to Liverpool’s academy as a U9 player in 2022, Nicholls is described as comfortable with the ball at his feet and developing into a reliable shot-stopper.
Nathaniel Ogungbemi, a left-back, is eligible to represent Nigeria at international level.
He has already featured for Brentford’s U18s while still technically a schoolboy.
Brentford’s report highlight his strength in one-v-one defensive situations and his ability to bring composure to the backline.
The defender has shown maturity beyond his years and represents another coup for Brentford’s increasingly impressive academy setup.
Both players have signed scholarship agreements as part of Premier League regulations, which require all U17 players to commence the season on scholarship terms before becoming eligible for professional contracts.
They join nine other scholars in what represents one of Brentford’s most promising academy intakes since relaunching their youth system.
