Brentford would prefer Yoane Wissa to link back up with former boss Thomas Frank at Tottenham this summer rather than sell him to Newcastle despite his desire to join the Magpies.

Wissa’s future has been up in the air over the last few weeks, with a move to St James’ Park in the balance amid the Magpies’ search for new forwards as Alexander Isak forces an exit.

His 19 league goals helped Brentford to a 10th-placed finish last season, and the Magpies saw their initial bid of £25million [Sky Sports] for him rejected last month, but Wissa has threatened to refuse to play for Brentford if he is not able to seal a move away.

Newcastle returned with a new bid for Wissa worth £35million plus £5m in add-ons on Wednesday (20 August), but that was duly rejected once again for falling below Brentford’s valuation of his services.

Brentford are demanding £60m for his signature [The Standard] despite him entering the last official year of his contract, and another development has now emerged around his future with the Bees preferring to sell him to a different club.

The Daily Mail (20 August) have revealed that Spurs boss Frank wants to be reunited with Wissa, who he signed for Brentford in 2021, as the North London outfit explore a part-exchange deal involving Richarlison plus cash for Eberechi Eze with Crystal Palace.

Frank wants another attacker to join alongside Eze, and so the club will target the DR Congo international, with the same report also stating that the feeling is that Brentford are delaying his Newcastle move because “they want to sell Wissa to Tottenham,” given their strong relationship with Frank.

The Bees’ stalling is said to have angered the 28-year-old and his camp as they have been waiting for a deal to be agreed with the Magpies for more than three weeks, with his “heart set” on a move to St James’ Park.

Football Insider verdict

Wissa has had his heart set on a move to Tyneside, but Newcastle’s reluctance to meet his valuation could and should put him off the move, and linking back up with the man who made him the player he is today would surely appeal right now.

Former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in June that Tottenham had turned their attentions towards a deal to sign Wissa, with the 28-year-old seen as the ideal fit for Frank’s plans in North London.

Wissa became a top Premier League forward under the Dane’s guidance in West London, and he also nurtured the talented Bryan Mbeumo to similar heights prior to his summer move to Man United.

Spurs are also able to offer Champions League football like Newcastle, and are arguably much more well-placed to challenge at the top of the Premier League than the Magpies due to their stability and better transfer window.

Wissa’s uncertainty around a move to Tottenham likely stems from a potential lack of game-time, but with Newcastle having no plans to sell Isak this summer, he could well end up as a back-up on Tyneside too, so Spurs still seems like the more attractive switch.
