Newcastle United are lining up a fresh bid to sign Brentford forward Yoane Wissa despite having an initial offer worth £25million rejected.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the 28-year-old’s future after making clear his desire to leave the Gtech Community Stadium.

The clubs are not believed to be far apart in their valuations, and there is a growing belief that Brentford will reluctantly accept offers if they can identify his replacement.

Football Insider revealed on 13 July that Brentford would not sell Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo this summer after reaching an agreement for the former’s departure.

However, his decision to push for the move is viewed as key to the negotiations as he is doing everything he can to push through a move to St James’ Park.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 15 July that Brentford could demand £50million for Wissa as they intended to price clubs out of the deal before he went on strike.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 28 July that Newcastle are pushing to sign Wissa and are closing in on a compromise with Brentford.

The Bees are reluctant to let their star man leave and are expected to demand a high price for his sale, but have begun working on finding a replacement for him.

O’Rouke explained that Newcastle are unlikely to walk away from the deal as things stand, and believe a deal can be agreed before too long.

“I don’t think their valuations are miles apart,” he told Football Insider.

“Newcastle bid around £25million for him and I think Brentford are holding out for more, and they’re entitled to do that as well.

“The deal isn’t anywhere near dead, the key thing is Wissa is interested in a move to Newcastle.

“The only obstacle is that Brentford are reluctant sellers, having sold Bryan Mbeumo to Man United this summer they don’t want to lose both of their key players in the same window.

“He has made his unhappiness clear to Brentford, he’s left their pre-season training camp for talks.

“He’s trying to force this move to Newcastle and that’s encouraging for Newcastle, he’s doing everything he can to push through a move to St James’ Park.

“Newcastle aren’t going to walk away from this after having one bid rejected, they will make an improved offer for him.

“I think if Brentford can find a replacement for Wissa, Brentford will reluctantly let him move on.”

Alongside their ambitions of signing Wissa, Newcastle have also set their sights on a potential deal for Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins this summer.

Brown told Football Insider on 29 July that Newcastle are interested in signing Watkins as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak should he leave the club.

Isak has made his desire to join Liverpool clear and was left out of the squad for the pre-season tour of Asia, forcing Eddie Howe’s side into the transfer market.

Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed on 28 July that Aston Villa are open to offers for Watkins and have been surprised by the lack of interest this summer.
