The fallout from Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday has been dominated by talk of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

When confirming his decision to leave the club at the end of the season, Alexander-Arnold pleaded with supporters to not let his exit impact on the title celebrations.

Unfortunately for the right-back, though, it was much too late for that.



The team were largely playing well on the pitch and were laying down a marker to Arsenal.

But while the focus has been almost entirely on Alexander-Arnold following the final whistle, it should also be noted that there were several top performers for Liverpool on the day.

Perhaps the most impressive of these was Andy Robertson, who quietly showed why he may not be finished with the Reds just yet.

Throughout the season there has been disappointment towards Robertson and his performances.

The Scotland captain looks set to be replaced in the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting that Liverpool will target Milos Kerkez as his successor.

While it does seem like a natural time to move on from Robertson, the 31-year-old rolled back the clock on Sunday.

During Liverpool’s last clash with Arsenal, back in October, Robertson’s failure to deal with Bukayo Saka was one of the first signs that he may no longer be the best option at left-back.

On Sunday, Robertson looked determined to limit Saka’s impact on the game and did so successfully.

But as well as standing up defensively, Liverpool’s left-back also finally made an impact in the final third.

Before Sunday, Robertson was still waiting for his first assist of the Premier League season.

It’s certainly food for thought for Arne Slot.

While the fact that his first assist of the season came on matchday 36 is no feather in Robertson’s cap, his cross for Gakpo was a reminder of what he can deliver.

At one stage, this was bread and butter for the left-back and we were seeing passes like this on a regular basis.

The Hungarian is only 21 and may need a period of adaptation into the team.

With Robertson still capable of turning in top quality performances against the best teams in the league, Liverpool can rest easy in the knowledge that Kerkez can take his time.

It seems unlikely that Robertson would have been sold this summer anyway, but as Slot seeks his replacement, the fiercely competitive Scot has just shown that whoever comes in is not going to have an easy task displacing him.
