Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes faced a pivotal moment during his team’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
In a match where United were already trailing, the Portuguese midfielder was sent off in the first half for a foul on Spurs’ James Maddison.
Fernandes, while closing down Maddison, appeared to slip before making contact, which led to referee Chris Kavanagh issuing a straight red card for serious foul play.
The decision, supported by VAR official John Brooks, further crippled an already struggling United side, who conceded two more goals in the second half.
The red card threatened to add to United’s woes, as it would have ruled Fernandes out for three crucial Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham.
Despite United’s poor run of form this season, Fernandes’ leadership has been essential, making his potential absence a significant blow.
The FA decision on the incident
After reviewing the incident, the FA overturned the red card following United’s appeal.
The ruling means Fernandes will be available for the upcoming matches, much to the relief of manager Erik ten Hag.
In an official statement, the FA confirmed via a post on X, “Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.”
“The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 29 September.”
Fernandes had expressed his frustration after the game, arguing that the foul was never deserving of a red card.
He revealed while speaking to Sky Sports, “Even Maddison… said, ‘It’s a foul, but it’s never a red card.'”
United can now breathe a sigh of relief as they look to regain momentum in the Premier League with their captain back in action.
