The playmaker demonstrated his attacking prowess last season by scoring 19 goals and producing 18 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions.
However, the arrival of Amorim’s summer signings, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, has seen the Portugal man occupying a deeper midfield role, rather than an attacking position.
Consequently, Fernandes could struggle to hit his best form this season, which may influence his decision on whether to stay in the North West beyond next summer.
Meanwhile, the fact that the 30-year-old’s only goal contribution in four appearances this term has come from the penalty spot arguably doesn’t bode well.
After starting the new season slowly, both Fernandes and Manchester United have a point to prove when they face local rivals Manchester City on 14 September.
