Bruno Guimaraes’ recent words will not have filled even the staunchest Newcastle fans with hope.

In January 2022, the Brazilian made his way to Newcastle United – with the Magpies picking him up for the moderate fee of £40m from Lyon.

Since then, his impact has been keenly felt at St James’ Park, and has been a transformative influence in midfield.

Guimaraes’s performances in the engine room for Eddie Howe’s side have not gone unnoticed.

With his help, Newcastle has been able to escape the relegation zone and get to the elite level of the Champions League.

Although the Magpies have not had the best season this time around, they are still heading into the right direction.

Ahead of Manchester City’s FA Cup quarter-final win against Newcastle United last weekend, Pep Guardiola heaped praise on the Brazilian:

“An exceptional holding midfielder; aggressive, with the ball has the pause, on set-pieces he’s aggressive.”

“A real, real complete holding midfielder since playing in Lyon.”

The Telegraph previously reported that Liverpool had made ‘enquiries’ regarding Guimaraes over the past summer transfer window.

Now the midfielder, who is a big fan of Steven Gerrard, has indirectly suggested that the Reds could have a chance landing Guimaraes in future.

What did Bruno Guimaraes say about his future?

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Brazil’s friendly against England at Wembley, the 26-year-old said (via Metro):

“It’s always been my dream to play here.

“I think ever since I joined Newcastle everything’s been good in my life, professionally and personally.”

He then dropped a slightly cryptic claim suggesting that he has ‘other goals’ that is more for ‘down the line’:

“I’m very happy to be playing amongst the best in the best league in the world.”

“I absolutely plan to play here for a long time, but I have other goals as well of moving.”

“But this is something more down the line, I’m really happy to be here in the league.”

Not exactly the most convincing promise to stay at Newcastle United.

Michael Edwards liked Guimaraes dating back to his Lyon days and could be a real transfer target to revisit should he seek a move away from St James’ Park.
