Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes poses with new signing Jarell Quansah from Liverpool(Image: Simon Rolfes Linkedin)

Sporting director Simon Rolfes believes Bayer Leverkusen have signed one of the most promising young defenders in European football after completing a deal for Liverpool's Jarell Quansah.

The Reds officially confirmed the sale of the Warrington-born centre-back on Wednesday morning, with the Bundesliga side paying an initial £30m with a further £5m in success-based add-ons.

Liverpool have also negotiated a buy-back clause for the 22-year-old, which is believed to be worth around the £51m mark but, according to reports in Germany, those terms do not become active until 2027.

Quansah started just one game in his preferred position at centre-back under Arne Slot last term prior to the Reds wrapping up the Premier League title in late April and as a result, the England Under-21 international had been keen to experience senior minutes elsewhere.

After formally confirming the most expensive acquisition in the club's history on Wednesday, Rolfes took to Linkedin to explain what he feels Bayer are getting with the purchase of the Reds defender.

Rolfes posted: "Champion incoming!

"Signing one of the most promising young defenders in English football is an important step for our squad planning.

Jarell Quansah recently lifted the U21 European Championship trophy with England and stood out not only as one of the most exciting centre-backs of the tournament, but also as a true leader of that team.

"His strengths speak for themselves: pace, agility, strong tackling, and the ability to play football on a high technical level.

Despite his young age, he already left a strong impression at Liverpool, competing for minutes in a backline filled with world-class players and gaining experience in the Premier League as well as the Champions League.

"With Jarell, our Bayer 04 Leverkusen defence gains dynamics, speed, and a lot of potential for the future.

He fits exactly into our philosophy and has the mindset and character to grow into a key player.

"Welcome under the Bayer-Cross, Jarell.

I’m looking forward to seeing your development in black and red."

Quansah underwent a medical on Monday after winning the European Under-21 Championship with the Young Lions against Germany in Slovakia on Saturday night/

I's the third transfer involving the two clubs this summer after Liverpool added the £29.5m Jeremie Frimpong and the £116m Florian Wirtz to their ranks last month.

Leverkusen were prepared to break their transfer record for Quansah after seeing Jonathan Tah leave for Bayern Munich on a free transfer.
