Every fan has seen this story before.

A talented youngster lights up the academy, earns a few chances in the first team, and then fades away into Europe’s football maze.

Sometimes it’s timing.

And sometimes the fit just isn’t right.

One attacking midfielder followed this exact path.

He travelled with the first team during a pre-season tour.

He impressed in training.

He even got a run-out in a high-profile Premier League clash against one of Liverpool’s fiercest rivals.

At the time, there was hope that this player could be part of a new wave of exciting talent.

He managed 20 appearances across competitions in that debut season, but game time dried up.

He went out on loan to Spain to find rhythm.

He showed flashes—35 games, three goals—but the consistency wasn’t enough to earn a long-term spot at Anfield.

Not long after, he made a permanent move elsewhere.

Now, more than a decade later, that same player is heading back to the club where it all started.

Cadiz CF have officially announced the signing of Jesús Joaquín Fernández, better known as Suso, on a four-year deal.

The 31-year-old, who began his football journey in Cádiz before moving to Liverpool at 16, has finally come full circle.

In a statement, the club said, “Cádiz Club de Fútbol and Jesús Joaquín Fernández ‘Suso’ have reached an agreement for the next four seasons.”

The former Red made his debut under Brendan Rodgers in the 2012/13 season and scored his only goal for Liverpool in a League Cup match against Middlesbrough.

His career has since taken him through AC Milan, Genoa, and most recently Sevilla, where he won two UEFA Europa League titles (2020, 2023).

Despite 173 appearances at Sevilla, Suso wasn’t a regular starter and featured sparingly in his final season.

Now with Cádiz—who finished 13th in Spain’s Segunda División—he has the chance to reignite his career.

Cádiz added in their announcement, “The Cadiz-born player… returns to the club where he trained until 2010, when he was signed by Liverpool FC at the age of 16.”

They also highlighted his decorated CV, which includes “an Italian Super Cup (2016), an Under-19 European Championship and two UEFA Europa League titles.”

After years away, the former Liverpool man is finally home.
