Eras of dominance in sport can come and go- and few know that better than Liverpool Football Club.

At Anfield, the men’s team built a dynasty from the early 1970s that lasted nearly two decades.

On the women’s side, however, Liverpool remains a work in progress.

Rebuilding

Success has been enjoyed, with back-to-back WSL titles claimed in 2013 and 2014, but football odds now favour rivals in the battle for domestic supremacy.  The Reds are in rebuilding mode and currently have no players in the England squad, which sits at 3/1 in Women’s Euros odds to retain their continental crown this summer.

The Lionesses, who reached the World Cup final a year on from winning the 2022 European Championship, are looking to become a dominant force in the international arena.

While there will be no Liverpool interest in Sarina Wiegman’s selection when another major tournament gets underway on Swiss soil, the Reds are represented elsewhere.

Amongst those hoping to get the nod from their respective nations is Norwegian forward Sophie Roman Haug.

She graced the Euros in 2022, before registering a hat-trick for her country in the group stage of the 2023 World Cup. Said efforts earned her a move from Roma to Liverpool, becoming the Reds’ record signing in the process.

They finished fourth at the 2007 World Cup and made at least the semi-finals – reaching two more finals – across a run of four Euros between 2001 and 2013.

Toiling

Since then, however, they’ve failed to qualify for the Olympics and have struggled in tournaments that bring together the best of Europe and the world.

In Ada Hegerberg, they possess the inaugural winner of the Ballon d’Or Feminin and arguably the first superstar in the women’s game not born in the United States.

It has been a humbling tumble from grace for Norway’s finest, but even fallen giants can be helped back to their feet.

Haug, now taking on a similar challenge at Liverpool, will hope to contribute to the rebuilding of new dynasties for both club and country, with history proving that anything is possible.
