Cristian Romero is in the running to takeover as Tottenham captain but already the idea the Argentine will be a suitable Son Heung-Min successor has been binned off.
After a decade at the club, Spurs icon Son has left to join LAFC for a reported £20million (Sky Sports).
The 33-year-old was a loyal servant to the club, going nine seasons without lifting a trophy until he ended the club’s 17-year drought by winning the Europa League.
His departure has opened up a debate on who will assume the vacant captaincy role ahead of the 2025-26 season.

One name in the mix for the armband is the Argentine centre-back, despite Football Insider revealing in April that Atletico Madrid are plotting a move for Romero this summer.
Moreover, Romero has also been linked with Real Madrid as the former Atalanta starlet weighs up his options amid an uncertain future in north London.
Discussing the running for the Spurs armband on talkSPORT (7 August), ex-Chelsea and West Ham left-back Scott Minto ruled out the World Cup winner as a candidate to assume the vacancy.

Speaking to Alex Crook, Minto asked: “Who has been made club captain?”
Crook responded: “I guess Romero is the obvious one.”
The former Charlton defender retorted: “Well, how long is he going to be there for?
I mean, very good player but hot-head on his day.”
Minto was in disbelief that the Argentina international is considered for the captaincy
Football Insider verdict
Amid all the speculation over his future in north London, announcing the Argentine as the new club captain in place of Son would dismiss all the transfer rumours.
The number 17 has deputised in the Korean’s absence last season, but his leadership was inconsistent, which even saw him storm off the pitch in a defeat against Wolves.
Moreover, being awarded with the armband may also lead to a potential contract extension in the future with the 27-year-old having just two more years on his current deal.

The ex-Juventus centre-half is at a critical moment in his Spurs career and needs to make a case for why he deserves to be captain.
Furthermore, it is highly likely that Lilywhites fans have their doubts about the World Cup winner and his overall dedication to the side.
I certainly have lacked confidence in his desire to play for the team and if he was to become our leader, it would put a lot of the uncertainty to bed.
Ben Davies is also the other notable candidate, but his age and likely lack of minutes means he would be a voice in the dressing room rather than on the pitch.
