Brentford have officially announced the signing of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in a deal worth up to £18 million, as he transitions from backup to No.1 at the Bees.
The 26-year-old, who spent a decade at Anfield, signed a five-year contract with the Bees, including a club option to extend by an additional year.
The transfer, structured as an initial £12.5 million payment with performance-related add-ons.
Brentford needed to secure long-term successor for departing goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who joins Bayer Leverkusen for £11 million.
Now Kelleher, speaking to the official Brentford website, has revealed his reasons for departing Anfield and joining the London club.
He explained that it was not a hard decision to leave Liverpool to pursue his own career as a No.1 – and that he had no reservations once he knew Brentford were in for him
“I’m buzzing, I’m really happy to be here,” said the 26-year-old in his first interview.
“I don’t think it was very difficult for me to leave [Liverpool].
I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a no.1 and to play every week.
“I heard of some interest a number of weeks ago?
Once I knew Brentford was in for me, it was definitely one I was really excited about and wanted to do as quickly as possible.
“When I come back for pre-season, all focus will be on what I want to do next year; to work on certain goals and what I need to improve on, and to have a really good season for Brentford.”
