Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher views the goalless draw with Belgium as a positive outcome, marking an encouraging start under interim boss John O’Shea.
Despite the Boys in Green being unable to capitalise on their opportunities, Kelleher sees the performance as a step in the right direction.
Evan Ferguson’s missed penalty midway through the first half was a notable moment in the match.
However, overall, it was a commendable showing from Ireland, particularly considering the challenges faced during the difficult 2023 campaign, which saw only two victories – both against Gibraltar.
Speaking to Virgin Media after the final whistle, Kelleher, who earned the starting position ahead of Gavin Bazunu due to his impressive form with Liverpool, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance.
“Plenty of positives to take from that,” the 25-year-old said.
“We start with a good basis with a clean sheet and I think we created a few chances.”
“We missed the penalty, [we’re] coming away with the feeling that maybe we should’ve got more.
“But also we’re still happy with a good start for us with John.
I thought we came in and did well today – positive.
“We started really well and then continued on and created a lot of chances
The first half I thought we were quite dominant to be fair.”
He added: “I wasn’t overly busy at all really and I thought we defended really well and kept the chances for them at a minimum.”
“It’s a big positive to take for us.”
Ireland will once again return to the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday for the visit of Switzerland and Kelleher will be expected to start in goal for the second consecutive following his impressive performances for Liverpool this season.
The academy graduate helped Jurgen Klopp’s side clinch the Carabao Cup last month – beating Chelsea 1-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium.
He has racked up 22 appearances across all competitions this term in the absence of the injured Alisson Becker who is set to return full training next month.
