Caoimhin Kelleher and his anticipated move to Brentford is nearing completion, with the Premier League clubs finalizing a deal worth up to £18 million ($24 million) for the Liverpool goalkeeper.
The transfer, which includes an initial £12.5 million fee and £5.5 million in performance-related add-ons, marks the end of the Irish international’s nine-year tenure at Anfield.
The 26-year-old has made 67 appearances for Liverpool since his 2019 debut but now seeks regular first-team football after years as Alisson Becker’s deputy.
Kelleher’s desire for a starting role has intensified following Liverpool’s acquisition of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, a move that positions the Georgian as Alisson’s long-term successor.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Republic of Ireland international has successfully passed his medical at the London club.
But an interesting detail has now emerged in the transfer, with it looking like the Anfield club will receive even less than £18 million for the shot stopper.
Cork Echo journalist Dylan O’Connell has revealed that Kelleher’s grassroots club, Ringmahon Rangers, hold a 20% sell-on clause for Kelleher.
This type of clause is standard but often overlooked feature in youth transfers as amateur clubs like the Rangers look to benefit from raising world-class talent.
Kelleher joined Liverpool’s academy in 2015 from the Cork side.
Founded in 1951 and operating primarily in amateur leagues, now stand to benefit from a significant financial windfall.
Ringmahon is due to receive approximately £2.5 million upfront and up to £3.6 million if all add-ons materialize during the 26-year-old’s stay at Brentford.
The Reds had initially valued Kelleher at over £20 million but compromised due to his expiring contract.
Regardless, Ringmahon’s share will far exceed the €15,000 compensation they received when Kelleher first joined Liverpool.
For Ringmahon, a club that has produced Republic of Ireland internationals like Alan Browne and John Kavanagh, this payout represents their largest-ever financial injection.
Ringmahon Rangers previously received a substantial payment of €50,000 from the Reds paid when Kelleher earned his first cap for the Republic of Ireland in 2021.
