Backups become starters.
Teams look for quality in places where others aren’t watching.
That’s what makes this current goalkeeping situation so interesting.
Caoimhin Kelleher has always been highly rated at Liverpool.
He’s been patient, backing up Alisson Becker, stepping in when needed, and performing well.
But there’s always been a question: how long will he wait?
And more importantly, when will he finally get the chance to be a number one somewhere else?
That chance could now be coming, and it looks like a Premier League move is on the cards.
According to Sky Sports’ Lyle Thomas, Kelleher is the “chosen replacement” for Brentford’s starting spot.
“Brentford are currently in the midst of a potential change in goal, with Mark Flekken closing in on a move to Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher the chosen replacement.”
That’s because their current No.
1, Mark Flekken, is “on the verge of a move to Bayer Leverkusen”, per reports from BILD.
The German outlet also notes that Flekken will be “Leverkusen’s number 1” under new manager Erik ten Hag, replacing veteran Lukas Hradecky.
Flekken, 31, joined Brentford from SC Freiburg in 2023 and quickly established himself in the Premier League.
Now, he’s expected to sign a deal with Leverkusen “until 2028”, with a “transfer fee estimated at around €10 million.”
His current contract at Brentford runs until 2027, but that won’t stop the move.
Flekken is currently “in training camp with the Dutch national team”, and the plan is for him to complete the switch before upcoming international fixtures against Finland and Malta.
He has been on Leverkusen’s radar for a while.
“Flekken was already a hot candidate in Leverkusen before ten Hag was appointed as coach,” BILD added.
From Liverpool’s perspective, it’s a chance for Kelleher to finally step into a starting role.
Brentford looks like the right fit—and this time, it might not be ordinary speculation.
