Carragher believes Mikel Arteta has another "Mesut Ozil" on his hands at Arsenal

Jamie Carragher has warned "history is repeating itself" at Arsenal, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appearing to mirror Mesut Ozil's decline at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta insists he "doesn't want to compare" Aubameyang's predicament with Ozil's - but Carragher cannot look past the potential problem Arsenal are fast approaching.

We saw that with Mesut Ozil, who Arteta eventually eased out of the club.

Aubameyang was handed a lucrative three-year contract extension last summer but his performances and attitude have drawn huge criticism over the course of a torrid season.

There are clear parallels to be drawn with Ozil's former situation, with the German handed a big-money deal in January 2018 before enduring a sharp decline and eventually leaving the club earlier this year.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "Unless Aubameyang constantly steps up as he did when creating Nicolas Pepe’s goal on Thursday night [against Slavia Prague], Arteta has the same problem as he faced with Ozil last summer, with a well-paid underperformer absorbing massive wages.

"Now it looks like history is repeating itself with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
