Wycombe Wanderers striker Richard Kone has huge development potential with Celtic and Swansea City locked in a race for his signature.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson argued that Celtic will “fancy their chances” of signing Kone after his exploits with Wycombe.
Kone netted 18 times for Wycombe in League One last season and was the subject of a £6million bid from Luton Town in January, but stayed put at Adams Park and looks set to depart this summer instead.
Swansea’s bid to sign Kone this week is yet to come to fruition and the Swans have turned their attention elsewhere, as Robinson told Football Insider that Celtic are well-placed to bring him north of the border.
Celtic have missed the impact of Kyogo Furuhashi in their attack this season
Brendan Rodgers‘ side are yet to truly replace Kyogo Furuhashi after his exit in January, and Robinson told Football Insider that Kone’s signing would still be a case of Celtic “paying for potential rather than proven quality”.
This article contains exclusive comment from Paul Robinson, a football pundit and former England, Tottenham and Leeds goalkeeper.
Football Insider revealed on 8 August that Celtic are yet to succeed with three bids for Go Ahead Eagles winger Jakob Breum, and Kone could be another high-ceiling player who they potentially sign instead.

Speaking on the latest Inside Track podcast, Robinson tipped Celtic to beat Swansea to the 22-year-old’s signature, but highlighted the reasons why that Kone cannot be Rodgers’ number nine next season.
“You would suspect they’d fancy their chances to beat Swansea, but Swansea are heavily linked and seemingly a long way down the road to try and get the player”, Robinson told Football Insider.
“I think he’s raw – there’s definitely goalscoring potential there – is he ready to play in the Champions League for Celtic?
I’m not sure.
Swansea City manager Alan Sheehan also wants to sign Richard Kone this summer
“Is he willing; ready to be part of a squad, and Celtic pay for potential rather than proven quality?
There’s certainly a player there, which is why he’s attracting the interest of Swansea and Celtic.
“But after only 58 league games, and 18 of his 21 league goals in total all coming last year, you’d be skeptical of overpaying for him – but at 22 years old, there’s clearly a player there.”
Kyogo’s move to Rennes in January resulted in him returning to British shores with Birmingham City this summer, rubbing salt in Celtic‘s wounds with their former frontman prepares back in familiar territory.
Adam Idah has struggled for consistency at Celtic Park
That leaves Adam Idah as arguably the only proven number nine in Rodgers’ squad, and the Ireland frontman was criticised for a lacklustre display in Celtic’s opening-day win over St.
Mirren on 3 August.
Kone could provide the answer to Idah’s struggles at Parkhead and potentially continue his Wycombe form in the Scottish Premiership, but with just three league goals before last season, the Ivorian still represents a roll of the dice.
