Celtic have made a 'baffling' transfer decision - 'the fans are really moaning'

Fri 29 August 2025 7:00, UK

Celtic have been criticised for making a “baffling” transfer decision that will leave their supporters furious.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have had the perfect start to their Scottish Premiership campaign, winning all three of their league games so far.

However, their good form didn’t carry over into Europe, as Celtic were dumped out of the Champions League, beaten by Kazakh champions Kairat Almaty on penalties.

The Glasgow giants have had a quiet transfer window so far, and have reportedly spent less than £5million in total.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Celtic should have made much bigger moves in the market.

This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen CEO.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed that Celtic have around £90million in the bank currently, but are simply not spending the money in the transfer market.

Rodgers has added the likes of Shin Yamada, Kieran Tierney, and Benjamin Nygren to his squad, but all the incomings so far have either cost very little or nothing at all.

Wyness added that if Celtic had added players with enough quality to get them into the Champions League, then they would have earned the money back on the fees paid anyway.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “This is what the fans have been really moaning about, they’ve got the money in the bank.

Either they’re not trusting Brendan to spend it, or they’re just carrying on trying to keep that money going.

A couple of players would have actually secured Champions League qualification, and then you’d have had the Champions League money to pay for those couple of players.

“It’s very baffling why Celtic don’t continually improve and strengthen the squad.

They’ve had good success with Japanese players and other players coming in, the likes of Virgil van Dijk and others that have been great success stories.

“They are reluctant to take chances and spend some money, and I’m starting to get on the fans’ side now and wonder why the board is not allowing Brendan to strengthen, because I think it’s very important.

“However, here we are, another week, and this could be another club that we have to watch and see if there’s any big moves.

It’s going to be an absolutely fascinating week.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers is high on the shortlist of names Nottingham Forest would consider if Nuno Espirito Santo leaves the club, sources have told Football Insider.

Whispers are intensifying that Espirito Santo could be sacked by Forest, after news of a behind-the-scenes bust-up with owner Evangelos Marinakis went public.

Global head of football at the City Ground, Edu Gaspar, has also reportedly had a run-in with the Portuguese manager, who is unhappy with the club’s transfer activity.

Football Insider first revealed in April that Rodgers could quit Celtic amid Premier League interest, and sources say that the 52-year-old is firmly in contention for the Forest job if it became available.
