Celtic have turned to Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea for a last-gasp striker transfer following their failure to sign Anderlecht’s Kasper Dolberg.

Ajax appear to have won the race for Dolberg’s signature, handing yet more frustration to Brendan Rodgers as the hierarchy continues to let big-name players slip through their fingers.

The Hoops are still without a replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi, who left for Rennes in the winter transfer window, and now Adam Idah is set to join Swansea City in the Championship.

Goals are clearly a concern for the reigning Scottish Premiership champions, having already been knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers after two goalless draws against Kairat Almaty.

Instead, Rodgers could look to the current Europa Conference League and Club World Cup champions for a new striker in the form of David Datro Fofana, who spent half of last season in Turkey.

Taking to X (1 September), Anthony Joseph wrote: “Celtic have made a loan approach for Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana.

“The Hoops are still looking to sign two strikers before tonight’s 11pm deadline in Scotland, but time is running out.”

The 22-year-old’s career appears to have been completely forgotten about since joining the Blues from Molde in January 2023 on a deal worth up to £10million [BBC Sport].

He has made just four appearances since then, yet to hit the back of the net in a Chelsea shirt, and has spent the last two seasons on loan away from Stamford Bridge.

During the first six months of 2023/24, Datro Fofana netted twice in 17 appearances for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga before joining Burnley for the second half of the campaign.

With four goals in 15 appearances, some supporters expected him to be given an opportunity with the Blues, but that has failed to come to fruition at all for the young forward.

He could now be given the opportunity to shine, not just in Scotland, but also in the Europa League after the Hoops were knocked out of the Champions League recently.

Datro Fofana has shown moments of quality, having scored twice in nine appearances for Goztepe last season, but it is hardly the signing that Celtic fans would have been hoping for this summer.
