Liverpool have been urged to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer by someone who knows him very well.

The Reds could well be in the market for a new striker this summer to add further ammunition to the club’s already impressive forward line.

Jurgen Klopp brought in Diogo Jota from Wolves last summer to add to the front three, but now 12 months on there could be further reinforcements in attack.

Brentford signed Toney from Peterborough last year as a replacement for Ollie Watkins who moved to Aston Villa.

In his first season with the Bees, Toney scored 33 goals and provided 10 assists in 52 appearances, helping the club earn promotion to the Premier League in the process and finished the campaign as the Championship’s top scorer.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony was a key figure in Toney’s move to Brentford last summer, and now he’s urging Liverpool to sign the striker.

MacAnthony argues that the quality of Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold would see Toney fit in at Anfield.

“I’m a Liverpool fan and I know my players,” said MacAnthony on his Hard Truths podcast . “And I’d be delighted if we signed Ivan. Give me him over (Divock) Origi any day of the week.

“Liverpool cross the ball with quality for fun and imagine Ivan getting on the end of those crosses from those full-backs!

“Obviously we’ve done well financially from Ivan’s transfer and we could do better down the line, but I don’t mind him staying at Brentford either as we get paid if they stay in the Premier League.

“Ivan is only 24/25 and not yet at the peak of his powers. I can see him scoring 15 goals for Brentford and I can see him playing for England next season.

“There’s no way Brentford will be relegated either. They have an outside chance of a top 12 finish in my opinion.

“They have a good coach and they are a club who spend well who now have around £200 million to play with.”
