hampions League - LIVE!

It was a mixed night for the English clubs in the Champions League as Manchester City earned a slender lead over Borussia Dortmund but Liverpool were well-beaten by Real Madrid in Spain.

City needed a last-minute winner from Phil Foden to secure a 2-1 win, after Marco Reus’ late away goal had threatened to give Dortmund the upper-hand heading into the second leg. Kevin de Bruyne had opened the scoring early on, but the visitors had seen a Jude Bellingham goal disallowed by a dreadful decision.

Liverpool, meanwhile, had looked back to form in beating Arsenal on Saturday, but were all at sea in the first half in Madrid as Vinicius Jr. and Marco Asensio put Madrid two goals to the good. Mo Salah pulled one back soon after half-time but Vinicius quickly re-established the two-goal cushion which held out until full-time for a 3-1 win.

On Wednesday, Chelsea are looking to make amends for a shock loss to West Brom as they face Porto in Seville, while Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in a repeat of last season’s final

Porto dumped Italian giants Juventus out of the competition in the last 16 to book this last-eight encounter with Chelsea. So the Portuguese men are no mugs or minnows, whatever they would have people believe.

Both Porto manager Sergio Conceicao and veteran defender Pepe spent the pre-match press conferences talking up the disparity in squad investment.

Granted Porto's squad is tied together on a shoestring in comparison to Chelsea's mega-money superstars - but Porto themselves also insist price tags mean nothing once the match kicks off.

1617796220Chelsea talking point: First major mental test under Tuchel

New Blues boss Tuchel had pulled off a club-record 14-match unbeaten start at the Stamford Bridge helm, but all that came crashing down on Saturday. Thiago Silva’s red card changed the clash entirely, but Chelsea were resoundly beaten once down to 10 men.

Now both Tuchel himself and his squad must hit back to top form without delay, and this represents the first major adversity of the likeable German’s west London tenure.

Chelsea‘s Easter weekend went from bad to worse, when Saturday’s 5-2 battering by West Brom was followed up by Toni Rudiger and Kepa Arrizabalaga clashing in training on Sunday.

Rudiger and Kepa squared up to each other on the Cobham training centre pitches and had to be separated by team-mates and staff.

Blues boss Tuchel insists the matter has already been put to bed however, with both men showing “courage” to make the necessary apologies and move on.

1617779781Bayern vs PSG

With a ninth consecutive Bundesliga title almost certain, Bayern Munich can turn their full attention to defending the Champions League crown. Bayern opened a seven-point gap in the Bundesliga with a win over closest rival RB Leipzig on Saturday and promptly set their sights on tonight’s visit from PSG.

Parisian Kingsley Coman scored the only goal as Bayern beat the French team in last year’s final, and he may have to do it again with top striker Robert Lewandowski out with a knee injury. Leon Goretzka stepped up with the winner against Leipzig, with Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich both involved. All three have been outstanding this season and will be tasked with making up for Lewandowski’s absence.

PSG will be without their two best midfielders. Marco Verratti has contracted the coronavirus for the third time and the tough-tackling Leandro Paredes is suspended for the first leg.

Danilo Pereira and Idrissa Gueye could find themselves under a lot of pressure to stop Bayern from dictating the game, so PSG’s wide players will probably have to drop back and help out.

Porto are the most surprising team in the last eight after eliminating Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus in the round of 16. The Portuguese club is trying to make it to the semi-finals for the first time since winning the trophy in 2004. They also was a quarterfinalist in 2019, being eliminated against eventual champions Liverpool.

Chelsea have drastically improved since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager in January. They were unbeaten in 14 games under the German — including back-to-back wins over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League's last 16 — until a stunning 5-2 loss to lowly West Brom on Saturday. Chelsea had previously conceded only two goals in Tuchel's tenure.

Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has responded to Jurgen Klopp's "strange" stadium remark after Liverpool's humbling loss on Tuesday.

The game was being played at Real Madrid's 6,000-seat Di Stefano Stadium, which is home to their 'B' side, with the club using the absence of fans to speed up renovations on their Santiago Bernabeu home.

That has been the case since for nearly a year, a "strange" situation which Klopp hopes may work in his favour with the second leg being held at a "proper" stadium.

"It must be a really tricky task for Real Madrid at Anfield, with or without supporters," he said. "Tonight was really strange, it was a difficult and different situation because of the stadium.

"Anfield is at least a proper stadium and that will be good for us."

When asked about Klopp's remarks, Zidane simply said: "I don't have an opinion about what Jurgen says, we are proud to play in this stadium."

The midfielder was replaced by Thiago Alcantara before the interval, with many people having expected the Spaniard to start in the first place.

“It’s not a big story,” he insisted. “I don’t like it. He wasn’t the only one. It was tactical. I could have done a few more changes in that moment.”

1617744393Here is Liverpool captain for the night, Gini Wijnaldum

“It was difficult. We played against a good side. The way we did in the first half wasn’t good. We lost it quickly with simple passes. Two moments of not concentrating enough and they scored.

“We said in the second half we have to play our football and not lose the ball too easily and concentrate more. They were a few times dangerous with long balls. We played our own game [at times after the break] and that’s why we scored. Unfortuntately, they scored and that makes it more difficult.”

1617743699Kevin de Bruyne has been speaking to BT Sport

“The season in September started this way and never stopped. It has been an incredible run of games, the team has responded well to the challenge this year.

“We are in a good situation and a little bit privileged because we are able to compete for every trophy. We try to prepare game by game.”
