Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms for a £35 million defender targeted by Liverpool and Arsenal, as part of their efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. The player in question is the highly regarded 19-year-old Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, who has attracted interest from several of Europe’s top clubs due to his versatility in playing both left-back and centre-back positions.
Sources report that Chelsea have contacted Ajax regarding a deal for Hato, with both clubs now engaged in club-to-club discussions. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca values Hato’s ability to play out from the back and even provide assistance in midfield when required, making him a perfect fit for the team’s tactical plans. Hato has been a regular starter for Ajax over the past two seasons and debuted for the Dutch national team in November 2023, highlighting his rising profile in European football.
Arsenal had also pursued Hato over the summer, but ultimately decided to bolster their defence with the signing of Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera. Liverpool too have shown interest, making Hato one of several defensive targets amid their busy transfer window.
In addition to Hato, Chelsea are monitoring other potential signings, including Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, after the latter was omitted from United’s preseason tour squad. Chelsea’s transfer activity reflects their intention to compete strongly in the Premier League's upcoming 2025-26 season.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have agreed on a £63 million package for striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, which would almost complete their search for a new No.9 and significantly enhance their attacking options. Arsenal’s summer spending indicates their ambition to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title this season, following their three consecutive runner-up finishes.
