Chelsea to Make £11.4m Donation to Family of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva
Chelsea players have decided to donate £11.4 million of their FIFA Club World Cup winnings to the family of the late Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, who tragically died in a car accident earlier this summer. This heartwarming gesture reflects the football community's solidarity following the loss of the beloved Liverpool forward and his brother.
The donation will be made from a portion of Chelsea’s Club World Cup bonus fund, which totals around $15.5 million. The club and players have agreed to allocate an equal share of this fund towards supporting the bereaved family, with each player's contribution expected to be approximately $500,000. This generosity comes at a painful time for all close to Jota and Silva.
Diogo Jota was a key figure for Liverpool, well-liked by fans and teammates, as well as having a previous Premier League spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers. His death shook the football world, prompting numerous tributes globally. Liverpool have permanently retired Jota’s iconic number 20 shirt across all club levels in his honor and plan to build a memorial sculpture at Anfield.
Tributes continue ahead of the 2025/26 season, including a minute’s silence before Liverpool’s match against Bournemouth. The players will also wear a “Forever 20” emblem on their shirts and jackets throughout the season to commemorate Jota’s legacy.
This significant donation from Chelsea exemplifies a broader footballing respect and unity in the face of tragedy, honoring Diogo Jota’s memory and providing tangible support to his family during an overwhelmingly difficult period.
