Chelsea have reportedly identified Liverpool and Manchester United transfer target Timo Werner as an alternative to Lyon’s Moussa Dembele.

The RB Leipzig striker is being courted by top clubs across Europe after a series of excellent displays in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 24 goals in 28 games.

Jurgen Klopp has placed the 24-year-old as his top target for the summer, but the club are still not sure whether they want to activate his £49 million release clause.

The Reds are aiming to negotiate a lower fee for Werner, but Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff has warned that their star player’s price will not be reduced.

Despite Anfield being the Germany international’s preferred destination, Liverpool stalling on a move has opened the door for Manchester United and now Chelsea to enter the race.

According to ESPN, the Blues are in need of a No.9 and view Werner as a backup option for number one target Moussa Dembele.

Frank Lampard attempted to sign the French striker in the January transfer window, but baulked at his £80m price tag.

The club believe they can lure Werner to Stamford Bridge with the promise of more game time than he would get at Liverpool, where he would have to compete with Roberto Firmino.

Chelsea would welcome the competition for 22-year-old Tammy Abraham, with veteran striker Olivier Giroud offering up a potential third choice.

Lampard teased that further signings may be on the way after securing the services of Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech for next season.

‘I’m certainly excited about the squad we’ve got, with the young players and if we can get a few additions for areas I feel we need,’ Lampard told the Chelsea magazine last week.

‘We didn’t bring in anyone in January, it didn’t work out to be right for us at the time, and last summer we couldn’t bring anyone in, so those windows are gone and we haven’t changed.

‘So I am excited about the squad we’ve got, if we can freshen up in the right areas we all know that.’
