Chelsea are copying Tottenham’s sponsorship strategy in order to earn the club more money in the long run.

Since Boehly bought the West London side off Roman Abramovich in 2022, he has spent over £2billion on new players.

The spending hasn’t slowed down this summer either, with Chelsea adding the likes of Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, and Joao Pedro, among others.

To balance their debts the Blues need to bring in money from sponsorship, but over the last few years, they have not had a long-term front-of-shirt sponsor.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Boehly is following Daniel Levy’s strategy to make more money in the long run.

This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen CEO.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Chelsea are following Tottenham’s plan in terms of sponsorship, as they try and get the best deal.

Spurs have held off naming a title sponsor for their new stadium since 2019, and could now be set to agree a bumper deal.

Wyness added that although it is surprising, Boehly will have a valuation in mind for the front-of-shirt sponsor and is going to wait until he gets it.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s surprising certainly, but they’re going along with the Spurs naming rights philosophy of don’t give it away until we get the price that we really believe it’s worth.

“Chelsea are the Club World Cup champions, so there should be a premium for that in theory for any company being associated with Chelsea on the front of the shirt.

“Obviously Todd Boehly and his boys have a valuation in mind, and they’re going to wait until they get it.

So I have a lot of sympathy for what they’re trying to do.”

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are set to demand in excess of £80m to entertain offers for Morgan Rogers amid growing interest from Chelsea, sources have told Football Insider.

Rogers is seen as the “dream signing” for Chelsea, who have been keeping a close eye on his progress at Villa Park after a successful season under Unai Emery.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 28 July that Chelsea have proposed a player exchange for Rogers including cash plus Tosin Adarabioyo and Nicolas Jackson.

However, Villa are extremely reluctant to lose the England international this summer and have no plans to weaken Emery’s squad in the closing stages of the window.
