Chelsea have been told that they need to start suing players for misbehaviour after an issue within their squad.

Enzo Maresca’s side are preparing for their upcoming Premier League campaign and are coming off the back of Club World Cup success.

However, one player who is unlikely to feature for the Blues in any competition next season is Mykhailo Mudryk.

Mudryk is facing serious punishment for a doping violation and has been unable to play since he was suspended at the beginning of December.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that clubs should be able to sue players in situations like these.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that clubs need to have more power over the players and that there have to be consequences for actions.

Chelsea previously sued Adrian Mutu after he tested positive for cocaine during his time at Stamford Bridge. 

Wyness added that from his experience, the Blues will find it hard to fire Mudryk, who still has a contract until 2031.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I would hope that clubs start to look at suing players for misbehaviour in situations.

“I’m not saying this particular case, but I do believe that it is time that clubs had some ability.

It can’t all be one-sided that players can get all these huge rewards and not have responsibilities to conduct themselves properly.

“I’ve had a number of cases in the past where players have basically just taken the mickey, and have gone mad in terms of drugs, alcohol, etc.

Because of the contract, it’s been very hard to fire players.

“I think it’s time that some clubs stood up and showed club power against the player power right now, because players have got to realise that they’ve got responsibilities for these big contracts that they’re getting.

“I would think it’s got to be very much in the club’s interest to start showing some teeth and showing players that you’re going to get the rewards, but you’ve got to behave accordingly.”

Boehly may struggle to fire Mudryk

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are set to demand in excess of £80m to entertain offers for Morgan Rogers amid growing interest from Chelsea, sources have told Football Insider.

Rogers is seen as the “dream signing” for Chelsea, who have been keeping a close eye on his progress at Villa Park after a successful season under Unai Emery.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 28 July that Chelsea have proposed a player exchange for Rogers including cash plus Tosin Adarabioyo and Nicolas Jackson.

However, Villa are extremely reluctant to lose the England international this summer and have no plans to weaken Emery’s squad in the closing stages of the window.
