Bournemouth should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Alex Scott against Liverpool, according to Keith Hackett.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that Alexis Mac Allister “clattered” the Cherries midfielder in the penalty area at Anfield on Friday, 15 August.

At this moment in time, the Reds were only one goal ahead thanks to Hugo Ekitike, but Andoni Iraola‘s side were not given the chance to equalise from the spot before heading in for half-time.

Marcos Senesi had already avoided a sending-off for denying a goalscoring opportunity with his hand, but Arne Slot’s side were quickest out of the blocks in the second half, with a second goal coming from Cody Gakpo.

This article contains exclusive comments from ex-PGMOL chief, FIFA official and former professional referee Keith Hackett.

However, Antoine Semenyo, who was subjected to racial abuse, netted a 12-minute brace to drag the Cherries level, only for Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah to steal all three points in a 4-2 thriller.

The Premier League opener was filled to the brim with controversial moments, incredible goals, and huge clashes, but Anthony Taylor failed to address a new broken rule during the 90 minutes..

Matters could have been very different for the visitors, though, and the club will now feel hard done by after hearing Hackett’s opinion on the incident at Anfield.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: “Bournemouth had a real strong shout for a penalty kick when Alexis Mac Allister came in and clattered Alex Scott.

“It was a careless challenge, and as such, it is a foul.

This should have resulted in a penalty kick to Bournemouth.”

Anthony Taylor failed to award a penalty in Bournemouth’s favour.
