Former Liverpool goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel left the club this summer, bringing an end to an influential four-year spell at the AXA Training Centre.

The former Brazil international and World Cup winner arrived in November 2021 as part of Jürgen Klopp’s backroom staff, tasked with shaping the Reds’ modern goalkeeping philosophy.

His work quickly elevated Liverpool’s reputation as a breeding ground for elite shot-stoppers, and he became a key figure behind the scenes.

Taffarel played a central role in mentoring Alisson Becker, who has often spoken of the value of his guidance.

Those inside the club were equally full of praise – with fellow coach John Achterberg even admitting that, after Klopp’s departure, “if they would also change Taffarel, they probably would have told Ali to find a new club basically”.

And having left Anfield last month, the former Liverpool man has now announced a new role.

Taking to Instagram, Taffarel has revealed his appointment to a new permanent position with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) as Goalkeeper Preparation Coordinator for the national team.

The 59-year-old World Cup winner shared the news on his Instagram account, expressing his happiness to “continue serving our national team, now integrating the permanent technical committee and assuming the position of Goalkeeper Preparation Coordinator of the CBF”.

Meanwhile, an official statement from the CBF read:

“The president of the CBF, Samir Xaud, received on Wednesday (13) the goalkeeper coach of the Brazilian team, Cláudio Taffarel, and the doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, at the entity’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.”

“The world champion was made official as a member of the permanent coaching staff, after leaving Liverpool, where he worked for three and a half years as goalkeeper coach of the English team.”

“Also present at the tribute were Rodrigo Caetano, general executive coordinator of CBF selections, and coach Carlo Ancelotti.”
