Legendary Liverpool goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel has revealed where Alisson’s future will lie amid continued interest from Saudi Arabia.
Last summer, plenty of reports detailed that Alisson was approached by the Saudi Pro League with financial terms described as “attractive.”
The interest was mainly from Al-Nassr, and it did for a little while last year that the Brazilian could have moved on.
When it became clear that Alisson would not be moving from Liverpool, Al Nassr instead signed another Brazilian goalkeeper in Bento to address their needs.
Widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of the last five years, it then came as a surprise when reports emerged that Saudi Arabia was planning an ‘audacious swoop’ for the 32-year-old.
But Claudio Taffarel, who ex-goalkeeping coach John Achterberg credits with being a big reason why Alisson stayed after Klopp’s exit, believes that his understudy wants to continue the story at Anfield:
“Ali wants to continue living this story.
I saw that this wave of Saudi Arabia come with great opportunities, very high offers,” Taffarel told ESPN Brasil.
“But he always says: ‘Wow, I want to continue this story because I owe a lot to them here, and I want to continue this life here’.
“I was impressed when I arrived.
Showing that in the games, important games.”
While Alisson remains central to Liverpool’s plans, the club proactively secured Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili for €40 million (£34 million) last summer, a move interpreted as succession planning.
The World Cup winner also believes that the incoming Giorgi Maramadshivili will find it hard to compete with the Brazilian to dislodge him from the No.1 position:
“The club made this option there (to sign Mamardashvili), I think a year ago, a year and a bit ago.”
“This purchase of this young man, maybe a little for the future?
But Alisson is a guy who is at a very high level.”
“And even because of age, with experience, with will, you know?
It will be very difficult for someone to come here and replace him, right?”
From Taffarel’s words, it seems we can look forward to seeing Alisson at Liverpool for a while more – with the 32-year-old’s contract expiring in 2027.
