Liverpool’s transfer record under FSG has been largely exemplary, with the club consistently identifying and acquiring world-class talent that transforms their fortunes.
The signings of Virgil van Dijk (£75m), Alisson (£67m), Mohamed Salah (£34m), and Sadio Mané (£34m) represent masterstrokes that directly contributed to Champions League and Premier League glory.
But Alexis Mac Allister’s £35 million move from Brighton to Liverpool in June 2023 stands as one of the shrewdest signings in recent Premier League history.
The World Cup winner arrived for a fraction of his true value, thanks to a cleverly negotiated release clause that Brighton had inserted into his contract extension just months earlier.
What made the deal even more remarkable was the timing and context.
Liverpool had been priced out of moves for Jude Bellingham (£88.5m to Real Madrid) and needed midfield reinforcements after losing James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Mac Allister, fresh from starring in Argentina’s World Cup triumph and Brighton’s best-ever Premier League campaign, represented exceptional value.
And it looks like his former club are still missing him.
Brighton CEO Tony Bloom, when quizzed by Brighton’s YouTube channel on which player he would love to still see at the club, he named Alexis Mac Allister
“Well, in the last five years we’ve sold some top players who are playing at really big clubs and doing fantastically well,” he said.
“It’s tough to name one of those players, but I guess I’d pick Alexis, who I wish was still at the club
He did (win the Premier League) after winning the World Cup while a Brighton player.”
He caveated it with the fact that he is aware with how the football ecosystem works:
“He’s a brilliant player, a brilliant person and I’m just delighted for him.”
“I could say the same about quite a few others, but we understand how the system works.”
“We bring players in, they improve, hopefully they improve, a lot of the time they do improve and they get sold for big money.”
It’s no surprise that Bloom feels this way, as Mac Allister is now amongst the best midfielders in world football.
After an injury-disrupted pre-season, we should start seeing the best of the Argentinean soon as he gets back to peak fitness levels.
