Cody Gakpo reveals Bayern Munich interest after contract extension

The Dutchman was coming off the back of his most productive season at Liverpool during the Premier League-winning campaign, contributing 18 goals and seven assists across 49 matches.
The 26-year-old’s momentum was slightly disrupted following an unfortunate ankle injury in the Merseyside back in March.
Since joining from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, Gakpo has made 131 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 42 goals and providing 16 assists.
And now, speaking to ESPN while on international duty, the Liverpool man revealed how Bayern approached him but ultimately moved for his former teammate Luis Diaz instead, who joined the German giants in a £65 million deal in late July:
“If the future is uncertain, then it will just be a very difficult story,” Gakpo said.
“I think it took us a year.
Maybe a little longer or shorter, but it’s just a long process.”
“From what I understand, they [Bayern] have come, but in the end they have bought Luis Diaz.”
“It’s nice.
That doesn’t bother me anymore.”
“It’s difficult, because a lot is happening.
Other clubs come to you, but you may want to keep your own club.”
“Everyone deals with it in their own way, but it is certainly difficult.
If the future is uncertain, then it will just be a very difficult story.”
He has started all three of this season’s opening fixtures, contributing with a goal in Liverpool’s Premier League opener at Anfield against Bournemouth, and a brace of assists in last week’s win over Newcastle United.
Speaking on his contract extension recently signed, Gakpo said:
“It feels amazing to extend the contract here at this beautiful club.
I’m very happy at the club, a good group, good teammates, so the life around the football itself is very good and I enjoy every moment of it
