Cody Gakpo has revealed how Arne Slot and Liverpool are preparing to face Manchester City on Sunday.

Liverpool will play arguably their biggest game of the season on Sunday when they welcome Pep Guardiola’s side to Anfield.

The Reds come into this tie sitting top of the table with an eight-point lead above a struggling City side, who have lost their last three league games.

Guardiola’s side is in a position they are not used to.

The Reds are unbeaten in 15 games, winning 14 times and drawing once since their narrow 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool’s most recent win in that series was a 2-0 win over Real Madrid, which made it six wins on the bounce for the Reds.

However, despite their contrasting forms, Liverpool and Gakpo know the danger Guardiola’s side can pose.

Liverpool can open an eleven-point gap at the top with a win over Manchester City, yet Gakpo insists that the Reds are not looking past their game against the reigning champions.

What Cody Gakpo said about Manchester City

Speaking to the club’s official website ahead of the City game at Anfield, Cody Gakpo revealed that the players are only focused on themselves, not the struggles of other teams or the league table.

“Obviously, we are in a good position; you cannot deny that,” he said.

“But I think it’s still early in the season, so we are not really looking at the table yet.

Obviously, we are aware of the situation, but we have to keep winning the games to stay on top and also just to win the games.”

Gakpo also stated that Slot ensures the players remain focused on the game on Sunday and don’t think too far ahead.

“That’s what we are training for, working hard for, staying calm for as well, and I think that is also a strength of our team: that we are not really getting dragged away in the situation, but we really are focused on the next game ahead, and that will be the case now as well,” he added.

“I think that’s a big strength of the group but also of the staff.

I think how the manager approaches each game is – I think I said it before – like we didn’t play a game before and we don’t play a game after.

“I think that is very helpful, also because we have a lot of young players as well?

So, yeah, I think it is good [and] I think the more experienced players in the team also help us: the players that won already a lot of things, they know how to act in these sort of situations.

“They help us as well, and it’s only good for us.”

While Gakpo could play a part on Sunday after starting on the bench against Real Madrid, Liverpool will be without Ibrahima Konate, who is expected to be out for 5-6 weeks due to a knee injury.
