Liverpool star Cody Gakpo has been praised by a former Bayern Munich icon amid rumours linking the forward with an Anfield exit.

Gakpo starred for the Reds on their way to winning the Premier League title in the first year with Arne Slot as the club's head coach.

It was in January 2023 that Liverpool signed Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth around £40 million.

The Netherlands international has since gone on to score 41 goals in 128 appearances, including 18 in all competitions this term on the way to helping the Reds win a 20th league title.

The summer transfer window has just opened and already there has been speculation surrounding the business that Liverpool may conduct over the next few months.

As well as potential new signings, existing members of the Reds' squad have been linked with moves away from Merseyside.

Gakpo is one player who has been linked with an Anfield exit this summer, with reports in Germany claiming that Bayern Munich are expressing an interest in the 26-year-old.

It's not just Gakpo who has been linked with the Bundesliga champions, though, with AC Milan's Rafael Leao and Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma also players of interest.

Former Bayern star Mark van Bommel has addressed the speculation linking Gakpo with a move to the German champions, explaining why he rates the Liverpool forward so highly.

"Cody is doing very well for Liverpool and also for our national team," Van Bommel said in an interview with Sport Bild.

"He's a very fast winger who performs brilliantly on his own.

"What's special is that he's also a very good finisher.

He's a real goal threat!"

Van Bommel added: "In addition to his footballing qualities, Gakpo is Dutch - and Dutch players have always been good at Bayern.

"But I'm not on Bayern's scouting team..."

Gakpo has made 128 appearances in total for Liverpool, scoring 41 times and registering 17 assists.
