Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has continued his fine form for Holland as he provided an assist for Memphis Depay's record-breaking goal.

The Dutchman's contribution led to his Reds teammates offering support after their important 3-2 away win at Lithuania which took Ronald Koeman's side top of their World Cup qualifying group.

The 26-year-old went into the international break on the back of penning a new long-term deal with Liverpool, reportedly keeping him at the club until 2030.

He played in each of Holland's two World Cup qualifiers as they picked up four points, including a draw with Poland, who are level on points with the Netherlands despite playing a game less.

Gakpo was the provider for the opener after just 11 minutes as Koeman's side squandered a two-goal lead before Depay doubled his tally for the evening shortly after the hour mark to ensure they concluded the break with a win.

The former Manchester United forward's effort in the first half meant that he became the country's leading goalscorer, overtaking Robin van Persie with his effort.

Gakpo congratulated his international teammate with a post on social media, he wrote: "History made.

Congrats to the legend @MemphisDepay on becoming the all-time top scorer.

"When you walk in faith, greatness follows."

There was a host of teammates past and present showing their support to Gakpo, including Jeremie Frimpong and Ryan Gravenberch.

Frimpong remained on Merseyside throughout the two-week lull due to a hamstring injury, which has saw Dominik Szoboszlai put in two standout displays in his place.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old midfielder was an unused substitute in Kaunas after playing the full 90 against Poland days earlier.

Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk was critical of the performance in Lithuania and he said: "We had a good 2-0 lead, but it ended too easily at 2-2, which made things difficult for ourselves.

It was simply bad.

"The most important thing is the three points, but if we want to make progress, this obviously can't happen.

"We all need to look in the mirror and do much better.
